Khaled Mahmud: Mushfiqur Rahim's ODI Career Could Have Shone Brighter at Number Four
Former Bangladesh head coach and team director, Khaled Mahmud, believes Mushfiqur Rahim's ODI career could have reached even greater heights if he had consistently batted at number four. Mushfiqur recently retired from ODIs, leaving behind a debate about his optimal batting position.
Despite retiring as Bangladesh's second-highest ODI run-scorer (7,795 runs), behind Tamim Iqbal, the question lingered: should Mushfiqur have primarily batted at number four or number six?
His record at number four is exceptional:
- He scored a record 4,372 runs in 118 innings in that position for Bangladesh.
- From 2013 to 2023, he was the second-highest run-scorer globally at number four, with 3,762 runs in 96 innings, only surpassed by Ross Taylor of New Zealand.
- Over the last decade, 70% of his runs came at number four, with consistent performances except for 2022 and a limited 2020.
However, in 2023, his batting position shifted significantly, with him primarily batting at number six and occasionally at number five.
"I believe that Mushfiqur is not a number six batter, he is a number four batter," stated Khaled Mahmud. "He takes his time, and once set, he is an outstanding player. Perhaps if he had played at number four more consistently, his career could have been even better."
Mahmud praised Mushfiqur's professionalism and dedication:
- He described Mushfiqur as a "completely self-made cricketer" and an "example for everyone."
- He highlighted Mushfiqur's hard work, discipline, and dedication, often citing him as a role model.
- He called Mushfiqur a "true ambassador of Bangladesh cricket and a great fighter."
While acknowledging the inevitability of retirement, Mahmud expressed respect for Mushfiqur's decision and wished him well. He also noted Mushfiqur's potential to reach 100 Test matches and hoped he would finish his Test career strongly.
