Captaincy front-runner, Najmul Hossain Shanto urges BCB to offer full freedom

Najmul Hossain's Captaincy Journey: Pressures, Triumphs, and Future Aspirations

Bangladesh's Test and ODI captain, Najmul Hossain, revealed he considered stepping down from captaincy across all three formats due to the immense pressure of managing the team. Despite being appointed captain until the 2025 Champions Trophy, he expressed a desire for the board to grant future captains greater authority and priority.

Najmul's leadership potential was highlighted during the 2023 World Cup when he filled in for Shakib Al Hasan, notably against India and Australia. Subsequently, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed him as the full-time captain across all formats.

His tenure has been marked by significant milestones, including:

  • Historic Test Victory: A maiden Test win against New Zealand at home in November 2023.
  • Overseas White-Ball Success: First-ever ODI and T20I series wins against New Zealand in New Zealand.
  • Landmark Test Series Win: A clean sweep against Pakistan in Pakistan, considered their biggest Test series victory.

However, these triumphs were followed by a disappointing tour of India, where Bangladesh suffered a clean sweep in the ODI series.

Najmul acknowledged that changes within the BCB, including the departure of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, created a challenging environment. He emphasized that while these changes might have had some impact, they were not an excuse for the team's poor performance in India. He also expressed concern about the timing of news regarding coaching changes, stating that it affected the team's focus and trust.

Following the 2024 T20 World Cup, Najmul considered relinquishing his captaincy entirely, particularly after the cancellation of the South Africa series. After discussions with BCB President Faruque Ahmed, he decided to continue leading the ODI and Test teams but stepped down from the T20 captaincy.

"I felt that all three formats was difficult for me, to be honest," Najmul stated, citing the pressure of juggling formats and a desire to focus on his batting. He also mentioned miscommunication issues that affected his enjoyment of the role.

The meeting with the BCB President proved pivotal, with Faruque Ahmed addressing Najmul's concerns and promising him greater freedom in leading the team. Najmul confirmed that the board has largely fulfilled this promise.

Looking ahead, Najmul believes that future captains, including himself, should be given long-term roles and greater authority. He emphasized the importance of captains having the final say on field decisions, aligning with practices in other leading cricket nations.

"I feel whoever is the captain - whether its me or someone else - he should be given the role long-term," he said. "I feel the captain should have more authority like with the other big teams of the world."
